Coach Mike Campbell (since 2003) inherited a program with a storied and successful history in NCAA Division II under long-time coach Vince Jarrett who led ACU to NCAA post-season play in 16 of his 18 seasons as coach.
Competing as an individual, Cyril Bounial (76-68-71-70=285) was the only player in the field to finish under par as he cruised to a six-stroke win at the 2010 NCAA D-II Championship. Bounial joins Abilene Christian's Jeev Milkha Singh, the 1993 D-II champ and current PGA Tour player, as the only Wildcats to win the national D-II title.
Bouniol earned his victory on the difficult 7,173-yard Nicklaus-designed Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana where the field's four-day scoring average was 78.65 for the best D-II teams and players in the nation.
Highly-ranked and #1 tournament seed Abilene Christian finished seventh at the 2010 NCAA D-II Midwest/South Central Regional played at The Territory Golf Club in Duncan, Okla. The top five teams advanced to the NCAA D-II Championship, and places 2-3-4 were claimed by Great Lakes Region (GLVC and GLIAC) teams shutting out the Texas teams. The wind blew hard during rounds two and three raising the field scoring average four strokes over round one.
The Wildcats' Cyril Bouniol (71-77-72=220) was runner-up for Regional medalist honors and advanced to compete as an individual at the 2010 NCAA D-II Finals. Tyler Sheppard (74-78-76=228) tied for 25th, and Alex Carpenter (70-82-77=229) tied for 31st.
Abilene Christian won the 2010 Lone Star Conference (LSC) Championship played at WinStar Golf Course in Thackerville, Okla. It was the Wildcats' first Lone Star title since 1995. Abilene Christian came from behind the last day led by co-individual champions Alex Carpenter (74-65-66=205) and Cyril Bouniol (72-64-69=205). Midwestern State was LSC runner-up, four shots behind the Wildcats.
Wind and rain the first day at WinStar made playing conditions difficult, but the weather and golf course improved after the first round. The field scoring average was three shots lower for rounds two and three as players took advantage of the wide-open golf course. Only two sub-par rounds were posted on day one, but par took a beating the next two days.
Abilene Christian qualified for the 2008 and 2009 NCAA D-II SoCentral Regional but did not qualify for nationals.
Campbell’s Wildcats advanced to the NCAA D-II Championship tournament in 2006 and 2007.
Campbell came to ACU after twelve years at Andrews High School teaching math and coaching girl’s basketball, golf and track and field.
Campbell was an All-District golfer at Andrews where he graduated in 1985 before competing for two years at South Plains Junior College. He transferred to ACU in 1990 and was a two-time All-American on two of Jarrett’s best teams.
Campbell also won the Lone Star Conference individual title in 1991. He graduated cum laude (mathematics) from ACU in 1991 and was hired by Andrews High School. His girl’s golf teams finished in the top three in the Class 4A State Championship in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
